For months tongues have been waging about the utilities
vehicles that was purchased by the state government for commissioners, house of
assembly members and other state functionaries. It has been a thing of worry
for citizens of the state that while salaries of workers are not paid in
months,debt profile and servicing on the increase and the ever increasing unemployment
and insecurity in the state ,that government will borrow such amount of money
just to buy car for individuals that may not have penny to maintain them if not
for government largess .what happens to the normal hilux vans that are more
rugged and durable for our roads .
The reason for this increasing trend in buying sophisticated
suv cars for public officers can be traced to years back when ward councilors were
given car by local government .it was a far cry from the kind of poverty that
one can see in our villages. Since then becoming a councilor became so competitive
that people even sell their lands and at worst lose their lives because of councillorship
that was once upon a time for retired headmasters in the 80s and 90s.
It went so bad that cars are bought for treasurers, HPMs who
are civil servants but are given these cars because of their ‘collaboration ‘with
local government executives in looting the treasury of the local government.
The financial recklessness in the local government has become so bad that some
public local government officials are using Camry worth of 9miilion naira. Is
that not a taboo? Some out of pricked conscience fail to drive theirs and sell
it off. What then do you expect from a state public servant when their contemporaries
at the local government are driving cars worth that much? With this kind of extrapolations,
we expect the ministers to be given private jets.
It’s obvious we have lost sense of service if not why should
an executive borrow to acquire leisure at the expense of our children yet
unborn to paid for?
Why should one called and voted for into a position live so flamboyantly
while the led suffer in penury?
Why have the led become so docile to talk and reject such
action thru rallies and talk shows?
